About - Shelties (upd 3/2007)
I got my first dog for Christmas 1986. She was a tricolour Sheltie bitch called 'Sahra' (Mistelin Black Charm). She was shy of people and other dogs (probably (partly?) due to a lack of socialisation as a young pup, my mistake) but she had fire! She was a brilliant competition dog, she really did her best when we competed in Agility, she LOVED it!!
I tried obedience with her and she did excellent heelwork but always broke stays. I trained her for two years before I got her to retrieve. When Tristan came, she gained so much confidence that started to do stays and in the end I got her through Open Class - these days she'd be TK2 ;).
We competed a lot in Agility and we got a fair share of wins. I still have lots of rosettes and cups and medals to remember our Moments of Fame. Sahra was not a lucky dog health wise, she broke her leg and had to have a wire put to it, but that did not stop her doing Agility. She was a fragile dog with a big heart.
Sahra was put to sleep to save further suffering in April 1995. The vets didn't know what was wrong with her but I've come to the conclusion it's possible that she died of one of the diseases transmitted by ticks (not so common then). She was only 8½ years old. And I just cannot believe that over 10 years (!) have passed since that sad sad day.. I remember thinking that she could not die, that it was impossible... — 'they are not dead who live in the hearts they leave behind'.
Run free, my love.
I was devastated after the loss of Sahra. I kept competing with Tris, like in a dream and like I had done for so many years. I missed Sahra so much that it was unbearable and by a chance I heard of an older sheltie who was looking for a home. She was related to Sahra (her grandfather was Sahra's father) and I went to have a look. She was a little blue merle called Tessie, very lively. She came to live with me for a 'trial period' as I wanted to see what she would think of Roo, who, at the time, was a mad 6-month-old! Tessie sat under the table and watched Roo for awhile and must have thought her insane! :) They got on so Tessie (Fin & Est ShCh Snowglows Pretty Promise) stayed. And I felt better, I felt I had got a little piece of Sahra back. Thanks, Lea.
Tessie stayed with me for several years, I did some Agility with her (but she was so different to Sahra, and anyway it wasn't the same so I stopped altogether doing Agility with any dog). I did some obedience, too, but only half heartedly. Tessie is a funny dog, she loves playing and is always on the go. I had to find a new home for my Zebra Finches because she used to 'herd' them (!) - she kept eyeing them when they were awake and if they weren't she would jump and hit the cage with her paws so that the finces made awful noise!! Tessie has a trio of boys who have done very well - two of them are Show Champions and all three have excellent temperaments.
Tessie was full of herself and always wanted to be the center of everything, she also did not know when to stop teasing other dogs.. So there started to be some problems with Roo and Tessie, they were not actually fighting but not in the best of terms and I started to think about getting a new home for Tessie. I had mated her for a final time but she got some virus and the two pups died a week before they were due. That was the start and the end of Cabaroo Shelties... Tessie was spayed and moved to Heinola in early Winter 2000.
She was a tiny dog but she got so much that now three families have enjoyed her company. :)
